You see it on TV, you know your friends play it, and you know for sure that people are winning a lot of money doing it. Poker is huge around the world, and it just keeps getting bigger. That being said, there are some simple strategies for beginners that you should acknowledge and learn before you start to play the game.

The two basic strategies to playing poker as a beginner is to first know the rules of the game. For example, you need to know that the cards you hold are the only thing that is going to win the game for you. You also need to know that all the face up cards are for everyone to share, so you not only need to know what you have, but you have to think about what others may have. If you only see your cards without envisioning what your opponents have you will not be very good at this game.

You need to know how to evaluate your own hand right away and know whether it is good enough to stay in or whether you should get out. Make note that whether you are playing online poker or live poker you need to be careful not to reveal anything about your hand that would clue others in to what you have. By showing "tells" you are basically laying out your hand in front of them which will get you beat every time.

The general strategy is to simply play good hands while learning the game. Although there are many strategies to take once you are familiar with the game, while you are starting out you need to learn your hands and play them correctly. For example, trying to bluff the chip leader out of a huge pot that he is already committed to will only get you sent to the rail. You should start out conservatively until you learn the specific strategy for each position in the game. There are ways to play certain cards in first position, middle position, and late position that only comes with the knowledge of knowing the intricacy of the game. For example, you should never play an Ace-low card in first position.

You also must be willing to fold a great number of your hands without getting impatient. The good hands will come eventually and you want to make sure you have the chips to play with them. You don't want to come out of the gate bluffing and trying to buy pots with third or fourth pair. Patience is one of the strategies to poker no matter what level you are at.

Finally, don't be afraid to cut your losses. A common mistake made by beginners is to decide that since they are already in the hand that they might as well play it out. That is the wrong strategy and one that will take you out of the game a lot quicker than needed.
