The Strategy to Betting In Poker
Poker is actually a very simple game in terms of what you 'should' do. Everyone knows that you bet when you have a good hand, and fold when you have a bad one. However, if it were that simple then no one would ever play. That is why if you are going to play poker you need to learn the strategy behind betting.
The main reasons to bet are to get more chips in the pot if you feel you are going to win, to drive your opponents out of the hand, to get information from your opponents, to bluff or semi-bluff, or even to get a free card. The fact is, if you have a good hand you want a lot of chips in the pot, but if you have a drawing hand, you want to be able to get at least one more card out of the community cards without being outbet by your opponent. For example, if you flop a flush you want to bet but you don't want it to be too much, but just enough to get some players to call you so that you can get paid. However, if you are one card away you want to bet big as a "semi-bluff" and even if you don't get it on the turn, they may be too afraid of your 'big hand' to bet themselves, giving you the river card for free where hopefully you will get your flush.
A big strategy with betting in poker is to narrow down the field. You simply do not want more than one or two other people in your hand if you have a good one. There are too many draws that people can get without even trying. For example, if you are in a four way action and you have top pair with top kicker but you see a flush draw or straight draw you want to bet to get out the people who will wait for it. If you don't bet then you risk the chance of losing the hand to someone who is seeing cards for free. This goes for preflop as well; when you have great cards such as pocket Aces or A-Ks. You want to bet in order to weed out the big and small blinds who many have nothing in their hand and end up with a monster.
Betting to get information is another strategy in which you bet to find out what your opponent is playing with, how aggressive they are, or how passive they are. By doing this you are taking a shot at the pot even if you have nothing, but if they call you are gaining information about their hand. Granted, it is a big risk, but you will then be able to see what kind of action they are taking on their hands.
Finally, you have the monster of all strategies - the bluffing bet. Bluffing is an effective tool that you can use to gain more chips without a hand. You can steal pots that you wouldn't otherwise win and you can intimidate your opponents with your aggressive style. Bluffing should be done on a regular basis, but not so much that you end up being called all of the time. It should be used when you are in late position and are able to push people out with a very aggressive bet. Betting is just one of the many strategies implemented in poker, but it is by far the most important.
